Dancing Their Way to Medal Success
with the London School of Salsa
Twenty local salsa dancers have hip-swivelled their way to success, becoming among the first in years to achieve their bronze, silver and gold official dance medals.
On Monday 4th July, there was a celebration of their success at a special UKA Dance Medals Party at The Duke, 125 Creek Road, SE8 3BU. The night began with salsa classes for all at 7.00pm, followed by an official medals presentation ceremony at 8.00pm, moving onto a night of freestyle dancing and dining.
Last year, the London School of Salsa pioneered UKA Dance Salsa and Rueda de Casino medals, reviving these after they had been left on the sidelines for years. Deptford’s dancers still leading the way – now with other schools across the country following suit, holding their own salsa medals courses.
The salsa medals assessment day was held at the West Beckenham Conservative Club in Beckenham south London on Saturday 21st May. Achieving a 100 per cent pass rate, dancers impressed UKA Dance examiners, achieving a fistful of top Distinction and Honours grades for bronze, silver and gold awards.
“It is an incredible achievement. Everybody worked so hard, they were so committed. I can’t even put into words how proud I am of them. They all stood out, they were an inspiration,” says London School of Salsa founder and instructor Lee Knights.
“Salsa is a passion, it gets inside you and the music is uplifting, you can’t help but smile, forget all your worries. It’s also a great way to keep fit and much more fun than going to the gym!” Lee continues: “Learning to dance salsa is a great way to make new friends too – it’s a very natural dance style, you don’t have to have Latin blood to do it, just a hunger to learn.”
The London School of Salsa offers salsa classes at The Duke in Deptford on Mondays from 7.00pm, absolute beginners are welcome, no partner needed, no need to book. Medals are optional, accredited salsa instructor training courses are also offered.

Saturday was an humungus and awesome day. We had our 2nd ever UKA Dance Salsa Medals Day, with dancers going for bronze, silver and some brave mad souls going for gold medals at the West Beckenham Conservative Club in Clock House, Bromley.
There was a full on dramatic back story – right at the last minute, we found out only days before the event – the venue had double booked. It was the FA Cup Final and the local team Crystal Palace was playing. We were expecting mayhem on the day at the club. So all the advance planning was in tatters. Instead of starting comfortably at 1pm, at the eleventh hour, the whole event had to start at a challenging 10.30am, with folks coming from across London, some after meeting work commitments. All this with the added pressure of last minute changes to everybody’s schedules.
BIG BIG BIG NOISY & LOOOONG round of applause to all the London School of Salsa’s amazing dancers….you should all be so proud of your achievement, giving your dances everything you got, you all gave it 100 per cent.
YOU WERE AN INSPIRATION. Well done, good job!
Big big extra special thank you to our fantastic volunteers Natasha, Justin, Alex and his timbales, Leon & Emma.
Only a few short weeks to wait for the results and we’re going to CELEBRATE with a great big party! Details sooon!
